the importance of legs
by admin on April 28, 2013Hello
Welcome to another instalment of our blog. Here we’ll look at legs and how important they are to include in your workout.
I see a lot of people in the gym focus on upper body, usually a lot on biceps and triceps, but ignore their lower half because it covered up over half the year. However working your legs regularly can have ma-hoo-sive positive effects on your health. Firstly your legs are huge muscles; this includes your bum, so working these muscles well can burn a lot of kcal due to the amount of muscle fibres you can recruit. Secondly with increased muscle mass comes increased metabolism, and therefore increased weight loss. So by working the big muscles in your legs you can increase your metabolism.
If you don’t have a lot of time to work your legs you can stick to a few basic exercises.
- Squats – now this is a fantastic exercise due to the amount of muscles you utilise.
- Stiff legged dead lifts – a lot of people neglect their hamstrings. This targets a muscle area that will ache the next day. However this is a more advanced exercise so if you are unsure how to perform it as one of our fitness team.
- Standing calf raises – as we have targeted the quadriceps and hamstrings now for the gastrocnemius, standing calf raises can be done using the smith machine.
Now the above is a very simple leg exercise plan but a great place to start.
