a little bit of nutrition information

by admin on January 13, 2013

Hello everybody

With the festive period well and truly gone we are experiencing a vibrant gym area with new members and old trying to achieve their new year resolutions. So here are some tips and facts to help you get on the right track.

Firstly nutrition. This is possibly the biggest of all minefields when it comes to getting healthy, with the average packet of crisps containing more fat than a chocolate bar it can sometimes be confusing as what to eat. However if you follow these NHS guidelines you will be on the right track.

Firstly you should always look at the nutrition label, now this may seem time consuming but it helps and could even put you off certain unhealthy foods. When looking at the labels always, and I repeat always look at the 100g column, this gives a fair representation of what the nutritional content is and allows foods to be compared evenly. Now when reading the back all you need to worry about is the fat, sugar and salt columns, and be careful as companies spend millions of pounds to try and hide this information or make it as confusing as possible to read.

In terms of fat a healthy amount will be 5g or less per 100 g of product , now this might not seem a lot but put into a percentage it will mean 5 % of what you are about to eat is fat. The same amount applies to sugar. When it comes to salt a high amount is 1.5 g per 100g (or 0.6g of sodium, which is another way companies try and hide the true extent of how unhealthy their food may be). I hope this information can help you achieve your goals, if you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to contact a member of the nirvana gym team.

In terms of exercise and achieving your goals here at nirvana we offer a variety of classes. All designed to help you achieve your target. Whether it be a spinning class to help you lose some weight or improve fitness, and don’t be scared to try it, it is more enjoyable than its reputation will have you think, or a body pump class which offers a different approach to aerobic activity there will be something for you.

As well as classes there will be challenges in the gym, such as this month’s vertical jump test. These challenges will be designed to test all manners of your fitness and allow you to gain a clearer picture of where you are and maybe even give you a chance to beat a world record.

Finally I’d like to thank you , if you have got to this point, for reading, if you have any quires or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the nirvana team via the phone or popping in , we are always happy to help.
